Cookie Policy
Last updated: August 8, 2026
This page explains the cookies and browser storage BackgammonWorld uses. The game itself relies on your browser's local storage — not tracking cookies — to work. Advertising partners may set their own cookies. You are always in control (see "How to control cookies" below).
1. What are cookies and local storage?
A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser. Local storage and session storage are similar browser mechanisms that let a site remember information on your device. We group all of these together as "storage" below.
2. Storage BackgammonWorld sets (strictly necessary / functional)
These are set by the game so it can function. They stay on your device, are not shared with anyone, and are not used for advertising or cross-site tracking.
| Name | Type | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
ca_token |
Session storage | Identifies your seat at a board so two browser tabs can play each other and a refresh reconnects you. | When you close the tab |
ca_player |
Local storage | A random guest identifier that keeps your guest rating in this browser. | Until you clear site data |
ca_auth |
Local storage | Keeps you signed in to your account. Removed when you log out. | Until logout / cleared |
ca_sound |
Local storage | Remembers whether you turned game sounds on or off. | Until you clear site data |
ca_pip |
Local storage | On the pip count trainer: your best time, your best run of correct answers, and which difficulty you last chose. Nothing is sent to us. | Until you clear site data |
3. Conversion measurement (Google Ads)
We promote BackgammonWorld with Google Ads. So that we can tell whether an ad actually led
someone to the game, every page loads Google's tag (gtag.js) with our Google Ads conversion ID
AW-18337532448. Its only purpose here is conversion measurement:
recognising that a visit followed one of our own ads, and counting how many of those visits
reached a given page. We do not use it to build advertising audiences, and we do not run
remarketing or personalized-advertising campaigns from this site.
This is not needed for the game to work. Unlike the storage in section 2, it exists purely for our advertising measurement, so it is only set where you have allowed it — see section 5 for how to prevent or remove it.
| Name | Type | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
_gcl_au |
Cookie (first-party, set by Google's tag) | Set on every visit. Links a later action to a click on one of our Google ads so a conversion can be counted. | About 90 days |
_gcl_aw |
Cookie (first-party, set by Google's tag) | Set only if you arrive by clicking one of our ads: stores that click's identifier
(gclid) so the visit can be attributed to it. |
About 90 days |
_gcl_ls |
Local storage (set by Google's tag) | Google's tag mirrors the same ad-click measurement data into local storage. | Until you clear site data |
Google may process this measurement data on its own infrastructure, including servers in the United States, under its own policies.
- How Google uses cookies in advertising: policies.google.com/technologies/ads
- How Google handles data from sites that use its services: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites
- Manage the ads Google shows you: Google Ad Settings
4. Affiliate links (Amazon)
Our "Boards we love" links point to Amazon. We do not set cookies for them, but if you click one, Amazon may set cookies on its own website to track the referral. That happens on Amazon's site and is covered by Amazon's cookie and privacy policies.
5. How to control cookies
- Browser settings: every major browser lets you block or delete cookies and clear local storage. This will also remove your guest rating and sign-in on this site.
- Conversion measurement: deleting the
_gcl_aucookie, or blocking third-party scripts / using a content blocker forgoogletagmanager.com, stops it. The game itself keeps working normally without it. - Personalized ads elsewhere: opt out at Google Ad Settings, optout.aboutads.info, or networkadvertising.org/choices.
- Blocking the game's functional storage may stop features like reconnecting or staying signed in from working.
